Cultivating Cultural Sensitivity: Doctors Without Borders
In the history of international development, the field has only recently come to consider the impact of race, gender, and culture, as important aspects to their work. Understanding this fact, Doctors Without Borders – an organization providing medical care and humanitarian assistance to communities affected by crises – proactively engaged World Trust to train roughly 300 field workers.
We designed and conducted a targeted workshop that directly confronted unconscious bias. Our approach centered on the power of strategic questioning – a method not focused on providing answers but on prompting individuals to critically examine their beliefs and assumptions, encouraging the exploration of new perspectives. The workshop also emphasized the creation of a conducive space for dialogue and collaboration, enabling participants to learn from one another and collectively devise strategies for positive change.
Our mission aims to cultivate a profound sense of belonging. Through our efforts, we united participants, emphasizing that genuine inclusivity transcends mere checkbox exercises. Instead, it serves as a catalyst for substantial internal shifts within organizations and field operations. These transformations enable these groups to authentically connect with and uplift the communities they serve, ultimately leading to more effective and culturally sensitive aid efforts.
